East St. Louis pavilions instructor: Paul Preissner
The final studio project called for a design of a series of pavilions across the Mississippi from Saarinen's St. Louis Gateway Arch. The program in the brief included multiple lobbies, lounges, and pools - all to be integrated within a designed landscape. Plane manipulations developed through previous exercise were used as a procedural basis for the design, with ‘affordances’ for various functions discovered in the deformed surfaces. The proposal aims to structure the visitors’ experience with a series of borders and canopies, which combined with the landscaping strategy, control the circulation on the site. Two pavilions are proposed on each end of the park, each oriented toward either St. Louis or East St. Louis. The site becomes a meeting ground between two municipalities.
